Jesus warns Peter that he will deny Him three times. Jesus then gives Peter three opportunities in the garden of Gethsemane to pray for strength to overcome but Peter sleeps instead. Peter then has three opportunities to confess his allegiance to Jesus but instead he denies him three times. Peter has seven opportunities to shift the outcome of his actions!
Peter was convinced that he would never do such a thing as denying his Lord but he did not do what was necessary to strengthen himself in the Lord. Jesus was so clear in warning him, and even giving him clear instruction by saying, “Keep alert and pray that you’ll be spared from this time of testing. For your spirit is eager enough, but your humanity is feeble.”
There are so many messages that are applicable to our lives in these passages. Stay alert, know when to pray, stay fed, know how to strengthen yourself in the Lord, pay attention to the warning of The Spirit, don’t trust the flesh, know when to war, continually fill yourself, stay prepared…The Holy Spirit will guide you into all truth but we must do our part to obey and respond.
