Love is an action, not a word
I was thinking this morning, “Would Louidgi (a young boy in Haiti) love me if I didn’t do anything for him?”. I was pondering if his love for me was a pure love for me or a love for the things I do for him. It instantly struck me that such a question cannot be asked because LOVE IS AN ACTION NOT A WORD. Let me explain.
If God had not sent His son to earth and if Christ had not sacrificed His life on the cross for us would we understand the magnitude of Their love for us? What if God didn’t show us how much He loved us and just told us? Would love be the same without the action? Louidgi knows and understands how much I love him because I show him. It would not be the same if I just told him.
Salvation does not require action (works) but LOVE does. Salvation is us accepting the love God has for us and the forgiveness that Jesus’ death on the cross gives us and moves us to a place of such great LOVE for the Father that we desire to show Him how much we LOVE Him through our actions…reading His word, praying, studying His word, worshiping Him, meditating on His word and obeying His word. God is LOVE and LOVE IS AN ACTION.
John 3:16 The Message (MSG)
16-18 “This is how much God loved the world: He gave his Son, his one and only Son. And this is why: so that no one need be destroyed; by believing in him, anyone can have a whole and lasting life. God didn’t go to all the trouble of sending his Son merely to point an accusing finger, telling the world how bad it was. He came to help, to put the world right again. Anyone who trusts in him is acquitted;
God shows us in this verse that LOVE IS AN ACTION, “He gave (ACTION) his Son”. When you are reading the bible and come across the word LOVE think of it as an ACTION.
This new understanding causes me to look at The Great Commandment with a whole new perspective.
Matthew 22:37-40 The Message (MSG)
37-40 Jesus said, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence.’ This is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.”
To LOVE God with all your passion, prayer and intelligence requires action. Love others as well as you love yourself? Do I love myself enough to feed myself when I am hungry? Do I love myself enough to clothe myself in proper clothing? Do I love myself enough to have sufficient housing? Than God’s word is clear…I must do the same for others.
I cannot LOVE Louidgi and all those in Haiti without giving them food, clothing and shelter. LOVE IS AN ACTION NOT A WORD.
