I was reminded today of what it looks like to truly lay down your life for the Lord.

Psalm 37:4 says

“Delight yourself in the Lord; And He will give you the desires of your heart.”

I believe before we can understand this verse we must understand what God is calling us to do when we give our lives to Christ.

Galatians 2:20 (emphasis added) says that we have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer “I” (my fleshly desires) who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

When we give our lives to Christ we are doing just that, giving our lives, our desires, our flesh to Him.

In Luke 9:23 Jesus invites us to come after Him by denying our selves and He lets us know that we must take up His cross DAILY and follow Him where He leads.  This means that we lay down our fleshly desires, our plans for our lives and seek after Him.

We may struggle to do this if we don’t realize the peace and assurance of what Jeremiah 29:11 tells us,

For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope.

We must realize that God’s plan for our lives far exceeds any dreams or desires that we may have.  We were created by Him and for Him so our only fulfillment is found in Him.  We can spend so much of our lives trying to fulfill our dreams and never become satisfied if they are not God’s desires for us.

When we belong to Christ our flesh with is passions and desires is crucified. (see Galatians 5:24).

God wants us to lay our lives down every day because He knows that earthly things and thoughts can entice us and take our focus off of Him.  I can promise that once we understand these truths of our christian journey we will walk in complete fulfillment.  Our pursuit needs to be for Him and Him alone.  Then He can give us the desires of our heart because our heart will be full of His desires.
